Emilia Facts, Four Months:

  • Sleep: Such a focus on sleep at this age! We had a MAJOR set-back right before Emmy turned four months. We were going from sometimes getting 4-5 hr stretches once a night to waking nearly EVERY HOUR for nearly 2 weeks. I hit a major exhaustion hurdle to the point of feeling physically ill, but thankfully Joe helped me out one weekend by taking both kids to his sisters house for 5hrs and I did not waste a second of that time - I was in bed with my eyes closed before they even left the driveway. Thankfully between that and Emmy getting herself out of this well-documented "Four Month Sleep Regression", I am back to feeling myself again. We're back to wakings anywhere from 2-4hrs at night, and even had one night that she went 7hrs straight this week (7pm-2am). This is encouraging, and she's been taking slightly better naps during the day (before this we were struggling having her sleep longer than a half hour at a time during the day - cat napper!) So I'm hopeful that we're turning a corner here. She is sleeping at night 100% in her crib, and we've noticed she does best in the Magic Merlin suit. Naps are mostly in the swing downstairs.
  • Teething: Probably related to sleep, Emmy is in full on teething mode! Her fist is constantly in her mouth and she drools through any shirt within minutes (bibs are a necessity!) We can see 2 little teeth buds on her lower gum and they seem like they are going to pop in any day now.
  • Hair: As you can tell in the photos, Emmy is losing all her hair! She developed dry skin/cradle cap that started peeling off in sections, bringing all her baby hair off with it! Her pediatrician agreed it was completely normal, and once the scalp peeled the cradle cap, her skin is looking very health underneath. We're wondering what type of hair will grow in (and how quickly!)
  • Dry skin/eczema: Along with her paler skin, Emmy also seems to have drier skin. She developed a pretty dry patch under her chin/upper chest area that was getting irritated even with frequent applications of Aquaphor so we stepped it up with some topical steroids 2x/day which cleared it right up. Trying to stay on top of it so that the rashes/irritation don't recur.
  • Milestones: As I mentioned above, Emmy is more interactive with LOTS of smiling and even giggling/laughing as well. We're still waiting on rolling and push ups - need to continue to work on tummy time, but she spends a lot more time in her gym and exersaucer now. She is also able to reach out and grab her toys now, sometimes even bringing them to her mouth.
  • Noises: This girl has a lot to say and is LOUD. She has a ton of range in her noises - from grunts to squeals and everything in between. She is definitely experimenting with sounds now as well as blowing bubbles with her lips. On her way to being a chatterbox just like her big brother!
Four Month Check-up:
Well, at least we know that all her millions of wake ups/feedings at night have lead to some crazy growing! Emmy made some big jumps from her 2 month numbers in weight/height!
Weight: 13lbs (20th%)
Height: 2'1'' (49th%)
Head Circumference: 42cm (83rd%)
Vaccines: Boosters for DTap, IPV, Hib, Pneumococcal Conjugate, Rotavirus
Everything looked great during her check up (just got the steroid to help with her skin). She is a healthy, growing little girl. We are so lucky. Next visit is at 6mo.

It was a productive month! Lots of growth/development. Despite a set-back with sleep earlier in the month, it feels like we are (finally) getting into a groove with better napping/bed time routines. Hoping we're turning the corner and headed towards more rest (for all) and less crying/fussiness. Emmy seems to be more into her surroundings and is more entertained when we're out and about with much less fussing. She is turning into a smiley girl, always with a big grin when I give her kisses. We're starting to enjoy life a whole lot more and settling more into our lives as a family of four!
